Curtin University/ABC news claiming that VG in particular is “indistinguishable from smoking” https://ift.tt/3r8YNYU

In todays article, ABC news refers to Professor Ben Mullins of Curtin University, claiming "But glycerol, which is also the other most major component, some of the health effects of straight glycerol exposure were indistinguishable from smoking a very high nicotine and high tar cigarette." (https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-12-18/vaping-law-changes-coming-illegal-import-nicotine-fluid/12993622)

I note the following research with regards to that claim:

https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0169811

While no particular research was referenced by the ABC, from what I have seen, the claims of dangerous byproducts from thermal decomposition of VG/PG are supported by experiments conducted at high power for the coils used and therefore high temperatures (though the actual temperature is generally not disclosed), often equivalent to a dry hit. BUT we need to be aware that clearly the decomposition into toxic byproducts commences at lower temperatures, and it looks like around 210C/410F is where it starts for VG, based on the evidence of these experiments. Of course the decomposition of any particular juice will depend on what ingredients are in it and at what levels.

Just one more reason that functioning temperature control on your device might be really important going forward (and there is lots of research showing you dont need an expensive device to get that, you just need to get a device that has been tested and shown to work properly).
